Su Golden at Vancouver Fashion Week. Su Golden, a high-end fashion brand from Vancouver, showcased its latest collection at Vancouver Fashion Week F/W 2024, leaving an indelible mark on the runway and in the minds of fashion enthusiasts.

Founded by the dynamic duo Sogol and Susan, Su Golden is not just a brand; it’s a narrative of passion, creativity, and the relentless pursuit of individuality. Sogol, the designer and creative director, embarked on her fashion journey with a background in chemical engineering. Her pivot from engineering to fashion design is a testament to following one’s true calling. After moving from Tehran to Montreal, she honed her skills in the Fashion Design program at College Lasalle Montreal despite having no prior knowledge of sewing, pattern-making, or sketching.

Today, Su Golden is a beacon of empowerment and edginess, with each piece designed and manufactured locally in Vancouver. The brand initially focused on high-end womenswear but has recently expanded into menswear, reflecting Sogol’s evolving creative passions.

A REVIEW

I always research a brand before I write about them. While there was little information online on Su Golden, I visited their website, read available bios, and read an interview with Marilyn R. Wilson. When I looked at available photos, I anticipated what I would see from Su Golden at Vancouver Fashion Week. I love to be surprised, and I was. 

Su Golden's collection, aptly named "Gala First, Streets After," graced the VFW runway with a narrative that transitioned from red-carpet elegance to street-style swag. Each outfit was a statement piece, meticulously designed and handmade, embodying the brand's mission to enhance individuality. What was a pleasant surprise to this critic was the designer's move towards the avant-garde.

Sparkling plays on evening and club wear are shown next to exaggerated outerwear pieces. A sculptural white jacket with an oversized pointed collar and shoulder piece gives the vibe of a sci-fi character. Hoodie-style jackets, a streetwear staple, are re-interrupted. One cropped jacket on a female model resembles a life preserver tucked around the face and paired with a sheer glittering gold column gown. A standout is a silver sheer dress with white thigh-high leggings, a white balloon-sleeve jacket, and trailing straps complete this wearable look. The collection's color story was a series of neutrals with metallic gold and silver  ending with black.

Avant-garde style defines fashion as characterized by bold, experimental, and often unconventional designs. The avant-garde nature of Su Golden's collection comes from the use of unconventional shapes, daring silhouettes, fabric choices,  and the use of volume. The final two pieces of the collection showed the designer's mastery of scale and shape. One look is a robe with protruding architectural inspired pieces, the model's face covered with a glittering net, it makes a dramatic impact. The closing look is a blue and white print panier skirt sitting out from the body like a piece of sculpture, surrounded by a vinyl black shroud, completed with a train. Su Golden created impactful runway fashion; these extravagant creations show the designer's creativity and skill. The streetwear focus of this collection made it thoroughly contemporary with an underlying elegance. The runway is a wonderful extension for a designer to show there work and experiment, many brands modify their runway looks to more wearable versions for their clients and customers. Designers often blend different pieces to create something truly unexpected. The avant-garde is a testament to the power of creativity. Avant-garde fashion is not for the faint-hearted. It’s for those who are willing to embrace their courage and be bold. Avant-garde fashion is for those who are not afraid to stand out and make a statement. It’s for those who are willing to push the boundaries of traditional fashion and create something new and unique.

Su Golden stands out as a brand that fearlessly experiments, evident in their collection that defied expectations. As I mentioned earlier, this collection pleasantly surprised me, and I eagerly anticipate the future creations from this label.
