Seyit Ares showed his collection on Thursday the 10th of October at VFW SS20. Ares is a German-born fashion designer who after studying make-up and hairstyling returned to school to study fashion. He studied fashion design at the Fashion Design Institut in Düsseldorf. During this period, he gained experience while interning at Marina Hoermannseder’s atelier in Berlin. Shortly after that he got the position as the designer’s assistant and moved to Berlin while finishing his studies from there. After a successful show in Paris, we are excited to welcome Seyit Ares to Vancouver Fashion Week.

SEYIT ARES PRESENTS BARBIE S&M

If you love a colorful, fun, and exciting romp you will love Seyit Ares. If Gianni Versace, Jean-Paul Gaultier, and Ru Paul had a love child it would be Seyit Ares. The inspiration for Barbie S&M is the current obsession with cosmetic surgery;

"Nowadays cosmetic surgeries are so popular that they are common in many countries. People are obsessed with the idea to be perfect and without flaws. They are so focused on looking impeccable on the outside that they don’t pay attention to what is inside – neither in them nor in other people. Therefore our society is perceived as superficial or we can only have skin-deep connections.

“Barbie SM” is a mirror image of today’s society and our surgery consumption. We want to look perfect for any price. But pursuiting perfection is our fatal flaw." -Seyit Ares

BARBIE S&M

What we see in this collection is "Barbie" brought to life in a world of bondage and leather. "I LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE" might be the theme song for this frolic into an S&M scene like none we've seen before. This ain't your daddies leather bar!

The leather of this collection is not black and dark but pink, teal and shiny metallic. The bondage dresses are both chic and camp. This year Met Gala was entitled “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and I listened to all the attendees try to put into words what camp is. However, the first problem with that premise is, it isn't about words it's about visuals and Seyit Ares understands that. This collection is camp, it shows that irresistible urge for being over the top!

The bondage dresses, metallic trench coats, and one-shoulder jumpsuits make a statement on the superficial world in which we live. With skill and creativity, Ares shows a silver palette coat worthy of any red carpet. A pink skirt with buckles accompanies a matching jacket with exaggerated shoulders (an audience favorite). We have all heard the mantra less is more, in this case, more is more. On the runway, Ares' fantasies come to life. We see fetish wear worked into glamorous evening wear. These glamorous outfits are seen, not in a dungeon somewhere, but on the catwalk where they dominated.
