THE SUMMER SCARF: A BREEZY STAPLE

The summer scarf may seem like an oxymoron, however, it is an essential part of my summer attire, and I'm sure I'm not alone. As the sun graces us with its warmth, the summer scarf emerges as a versatile accessory, seamlessly blending style and function. Far from being a mere winter necessity, scarves in summer offer a touch of elegance, a nod to history, and a canvas for personal expression. There is no better way to add a pattern or texture to an ensemble than adding a scarf. Often, the summer scarf is overlooked, but it is a practical and inexpensive way to add detail or refine a look.

Summer scarf: A Brief History, from Antiquity to Modern Chic.

Scarves have adorned humanity for millennia. In Ancient Egypt, Queen Nefertiti was depicted wearing a tightly woven scarf beneath her headdress, symbolizing status and sophistication. Fast forward to the Roman Empire, where men sported the focale, a cloth used to wipe sweat, highlighting the scarf's practical origins. By the 18th century, silk scarves had become fashionable among European elites, with figures such as Beethoven incorporating them into their attire.

Since then, scarves have become an integral part of everyday attire for many. Designer brands have put out scarves as luxury accessories. Think of Hermes or Liberty of London, and what might come to mind is their silk scarves that are often bold, beautiful and have adventurous graphic patterns. The 20th century saw celebrities like Grace Kelly, with a fashionable scarf tied at her neck, Jackie Kennedy wrapping her hairdo in a chic, Hermès-patterned scarf, or fashion icon Audrey Hepburn making the silk scarf a classic essential.

Designer scarves remain synonymous with luxury and style. Many designer scarves feature iconic designs and logos that are recognized worldwide. Owning a designer scarf is not just about having a beautiful accessory; it's about owning a piece of fashion history and heritage. Designer scarves are highly collectible, classic accessories that transcend both trends and seasons.

Styling the Summer Scarf: Tips for Everyone

For Women:

  • Hair Accessories: Channelling vintage vibes, tying a silk scarf around the head not only keeps hair in place but also exudes Old Hollywood glamour.

  • Neck Scarves: A lightweight scarf tied around the neck can elevate a simple outfit. This trend has even made its way into bridal fashion, with neck scarves adding a touch of elegance to wedding ensembles.

  • Scarf Skirts: Transforming a large scarf into a skirt or layering it over trousers offers a sustainable and stylish option. Celebrities like Chloë Sevigny and Alexa Chung have adopted this trend, adding a touch of flair to their summer wardrobes. This is also a great way to rejuvenate your summer wardrobe. A summer scarf is also a great way to heighten the look of a monochrome outfit, think all black with a dazzling silk scarf in a brilliant colour of your choice.

  • Casual Draping: For a relaxed vibe, drape a scarf loosely around the neck. This style pairs well with casual attire, adding a layer of interest to the ensemble.

  • Suit Enhancements: Adding a scarf to a summer suit can introduce texture and colour. Consider tucking a patterned scarf into the jacket for a subtle yet impactful statement.

IN CONCLUSION

I'm a maximalist when it comes to getting dressed, designing a room, or even setting the table. Darlings, I live by the motto most of the time that more is more. Adding that extra piece is often the way to add your personality to a look. The late, great fashion icon Coco Chanel famously said, "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off." This quote, often attributed to the iconic fashion designer, suggests that sometimes, less is more and that eliminating one accessory can create a more elegant and streamlined look. I don't disagree with this in principle, but a summer scarf can be the element that ties your outfit together, uniting colours or adding a splash of colour. A summer scarf is also a way of adding pattern or print. I love my scarves, share your scarf styling tips, and I look forward to hearing from you.
