NATHEE RAV- UNCHAINED AT VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2026

DAY 3 VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK F/W 2026

NATHEE RAV - UNCHAINED

VFW Day 3 set the stage for an evening of fashion that took us on a global journey. Vancouver Fashion Week, known for showcasing emerging voices and global perspectives, kicked off the third night with designer Nathee Rav. Rav brought her premiere collection, Unchained, to the runway.

The Designer: Nathee Rav

Nathalie Ravaoary is a fashion designer based in Vancouver, originally from Madagascar. Rav studied fashion design at Blanche Macdonald in Vancouver. As an emerging designer, Nathee Rav is part of a new generation that is reshaping the purpose of fashion. Rather than focusing solely on aesthetics, Rav views clothing as a medium of expression—almost like a wearable memoir. Their work reflects a deep sensitivity to emotional states and lived experiences, transforming internal narratives into tactile forms.

Rav's design language draws on themes of identity, resilience, and transformation, with an emphasis on texture, structure, and symbolism. There is an almost sculptural quality to the garments; these pieces not only dress the body but also support, protect, and sometimes challenge it. Fashion history has taught us that clothing can carry significant emotional weight—from the armour-like silhouettes of Alexander McQueen to the poetic deconstruction of Rei Kawakubo. Rav is clearly fluent in that language.

A REVIEW

At Vancouver Fashion Week, Nathee Rav approached the runway with a sense of romance, beauty and glamour. Rav did not avoid the spectacle but leaned toward it. Unchained unfolded with an intensity—its power rooted in construction, materiality, and an emotional through-line. I spoke with the designer prior to her show, and she explained her theme as " the emotional and psychological elements that shaped us. What I want to show is the structure, the intensity; you don't see chains. It is titled "Unchained" because it is about breaking free and finding freedom. This sense of freedom is different for everyone; for me, it is about showing strength. I show that strength through structure and bold colour, like red."

The silhouettes featured structured bodices—corseted, sculpted, and often slightly exaggerated at the shoulder or neckline—anchoring the collection, almost like protective shells. These were balanced by fluid skirts that introduced movement and a certain fragility, softening the rigidity above. Colour was deployed with intention rather than excess. Rav worked within a tightly edited palette—predominantly black and deep, burnished reds—before easing into a muted champagne. The red, in particular, carried weight. It wasn’t decorative; it punctuated the collection with moments of emotional clarity, appearing almost like flashes of memory against the darkness

The fabric supported the collection's narrative. Layered textiles—such as sheer overlays, textured surfaces, and subtle structural reinforcements—added depth to the garments without overwhelming their forms. The combination of lace, satin, and brocade, along with thoughtfully designed silhouettes, firmly established the collection as eveningwear.

Outstanding looks included look 1, the first look down the runway, which established the designer's theme. Look 1 set the tone: a sharply constructed red bodice paired with a tiered black skirt. The contrast between the rigid, almost armour-like top and the softness of the layered skirt established the collection's central dialogue—protection versus exposure.

Look, 5 refined that idea. A strapless, corseted dress in deep red clung more closely to the body, its surface subtly iridescent. The addition of sheer gloves and a delicate veil introduced a sense of intimacy, shifting the focus inward. By look 8, the mood shifted. A champagne-toned ensemble with a sculpted jacket and elongated skirt brought a sense of calm. The structure remained, but it softened, allowing the fabric to move more freely—less guarded, more assured. A classic look that relies on the designer's skills and knowledge of costume history to construct. The closing look #10 was a black gown with a sculptural piece that shielded the model's face. A stunning way to close out the collection of elegant and sophisticated eveningwear.

What ultimately defined Unchained was its discipline. Rav resisted the urge to over-explain, instead allowing silhouette, colour, and fabric to carry the narrative. The result was a collection that felt cohesive and considered, with each look contributing to a broader emotional arc. This cleverly conceived collection offers the designer's future customers many possibilities.
