GUERLINE KAMP

FW21

VANCOUVER DIGITAL FASHION WEEK

As is the tradition of  Vancouver Fashion Week the designers presenting are International.  Guerline Kamp comes from the Netherlands.  Ms. Kamp is a self proclaimed maximalist, who uses bright colors and finds inspiration in abstract art. Kamp studied clothing design at AMFI,  ( Amsterdam Fashion Institute). While Kamp does not currently have a commercial brand it is something she is working towards. Guerline will graduate in 2022.  For an more in depth overview , my colleague Marilyn R. Wilson has interviewed Guerline Kamp on her website.

GUERLINE KAMP - REVIEW

Guerline Kamp is a design student and this fact alone makes this capsule collection exciting. When a young designer is at school it is the time for experimentation. Young designers starting out in the fashion world are discovering how they will  express their ideas . I am thrilled to see a young designer who approaches her expression in such a fearless way.

For many designers the design process starts with an inspiration and Kamp is no different. The inspiration for this collection Kamp said started with an iron Tap-Tap wall hanging from her birthplace Haiti. While Kamp was adopted at age three, she says she has no recollection of her native land, therefore the object has a symbolic meaning. The appearance of the object and its recycled materials also influenced the designer in the materials she choose.

This collection is made up of six looks. The color pallet is bright, using primary colors, red, yellow and blue are predominant. What stands out is the playful nature of the garments. A cartoon like outline painted in black gives definition to the pieces, while reinforcing the childlike quality of the collection.

This collection is made from primarily recycled materials. There is a an international movement among many young designers to create sustainable fashion. Moreover this often makes for clothing that is one of a kind. Here Miss Kamp has presented six outfits that are bespoke looks, unlikely to be replicated as they appear here.

What really stands out in this collection is the exuberance of youth. The ability of the young during one of the most difficult times in modern history to express joy. While we all wish for things to return to normal throughout human history difficult times have always produced exciting art.

WHAT'S HOT

I have heard endless protests about the wearing of sweats and hoodies. However, while we are stuck inside, there are other options to the fashionistas pandemic attire dilemma. There is a tradition that goes back to the 19th century: the venerated house dress. It is a comfortable dress, perfect for chores and errands. A loose-fitting garment made to wear at home, by the pool, or at garden parties can indeed be stylish. During the pandemic, there has been a move towards loungewear made not only for comfort but for fashion too. The new loungewear dresses are not your grandma's house dress. These garments are fun and fresh. They are what's hot! I have worked with my partners to bring you the best choices. Shop now for the warmer weather.
