GABBEH BY FARIBA MIRZAIE
Gabbeh by Fariba Mirzaie is a Vancouver fashion line that I was only recently exposed too. While I consider myself to be in the know, somehow Fariba Mirzaie went under my radar. However, this changed last week when my friend Myriam Callot invited me to attend a fashion show, held in a home in West Vancouver. A home fashion show makes me think of the days of small salon shows. These were the tradition of Paris for decades. Certainly, what I love about a salon-style show is the intimacy and the proximity to the models and garments. I was thrilled to be in the midst of this show, surrounded by the artist's family, friends, and guests.
THE SHOW- FARIBA MIRZAIE
I sat on the arm of a chair in the living room and waited for the show to start. The environment had already been created by garments and textile pieces being displayed around the home. I was struck by these amazing textiles. However, I was only partially prepared for what I was about to see.
Fashion designers produce such a wide array of fashion. But few create the textiles that are used to make their garments. In this case Fabriba Mirzaie is a textile artist first and a fashion designer second. The textiles used to make the garments are the true story. What is so striking about the textiles is that they are truly unique. Organic and textural the pieces are much more than fashion and stand as works of art. Layers and textures, gauzy and undefined edges, all in organic color palettes .Moreover. these creations have silhouettes, often resembling sculpture more than clothing.

Certainly, the magnificence of the textiles is most successful in the gowns that are shown. Sheer, multi-toned and luminescent these dresses are one of a kind pieces. From the first that resembles the wings of a butterfly to others that incorporate a technique that is reminiscent of petals on a flower. Still, others incorporate qualities similar to quilts.
Fariba Mirzaie creates her pieces from scratch, a process that includes designing the fabric, patterns, and styles to create unique items of wearable art. By incorporating this craftsmanship into her process, Fariba can create one-of-a-kind designs meant for a distinctive niche in the field of fashion.

Overall the collection of garments show like a walk through the woods at dusk. Your eyes peer through filtered light. The shapes and forms, colors and textures create a fantasy world of beauty and mystery. Certainly, I like this retrospective show very much. I am now curious to see a collection. I would like to see these fabulous textiles used in creating a larger variety of fashion pieces. Often the commitment to a gown is huge , however a blouse , shawl or cover-up will open the designers commercial viability. I am excited to see what fashion comes from Fariba Mirzaie in the future.
