FASHION FEUD!
On Sunday night I 'm going to sit down with a big bowl of popcorn and watch the final episode of 'FEUD". I don't know if you have caught the T,V, series on the F.X. network by American Horror story creator Ryan Murphy. If you haven't too bad it will come around again and if you have I'm sure you"re awaiting the finale.
"FEUD" follows the story of screen legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford through the creation of "WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE ?"and it's aftermath. Since you are all aware by now of my love for Old Hollywood movies I just love this series .

Most of all my dear followers if you don't do anything else I ask to see " WHATEVER HAPPENS TO BABY JANE" and "FEUD". I wanted to write a blog post that would incorporate this great T.V. show "FEUD ' from a fashion point of view. First of all I would like to give a shout out to Lou Eyrich the costume designer for this series. Lou Eyrich did a great job in recreating old Hollywood. The glamor and the historical accurracy were both well done.
FASHION FEUD
The ides for this post came to me after I had watched most of the series. While I watched the program it gave me the idea of a fashion feud . What I mean by that this I have rarely seen two such distinctly different styles than that of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. The feud from the program also came across in the way they wore there clothes and what they wore.
Joan Crawford definitely had a signature look . She preferred a certain silhouette. That silhouette was fitted to the body. It was never empire-waisted but was always waisted. Usually the dress was sleeveless and low cut. Her accessories always included jewelry and her purse always matched her shoes. She was very match-y match-y.
Therefore on the other hand we have Bette Davis. Miss Davis was much more casual. She wore a lot of capris and loose fitting trousers. The silhouette created by Davis was very relaxed , dresses were often shirt dresses and skirts with sweater sets. Yet when needed she presented Hollywood glamour in her more simple style.
While Joan Crawford would never leave her house not being dressed from head to toe , Bette would wear her fur in the middle of summer with her capris and a plain shirt. Hence they represented polar opposites.
Fashion Opposites
Therefore as a result of this difference between the two I conceived this idea of this fashion feud . You may lean more towards the more formal style of Joan Crawford. Hence being more matched and dressed in a more precise manner. Yet you could be more of Bette in your style. Therefore being more relaxed and casual , not matching , but having a certain unexpected random elegance.
WhileI truly doubt that any of you falls firmly in one camp or the other all of the time. Rather that you tend towards one style or the other . These are what I as a costume designer might call archetypes , meaning a representation of common style or type .Hence as a result to follow on from my last blog post about using a stylist, it is these characteristics that as a stylist you would look for.
Being more formal on one side and oppositely being more casual on the other. Therefore two different people may style the same dress or outfit quiet differently . The more formal may choose to tuck in the blouse and wear a belt and where the more casual look is untucked and more carefree. It is in observing some of these archetypes that our own personal style sense is created.
SHOP YOUR STYLE
