COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK IS THE NEW EDGE OF STYLE

Copenhagen Fashion Week just held it's Spring 2020 show. Copenhagen Fashion Week is Scandinavia’s only fashion week taking place biannually in January/February and August. Each season, Copenhagen Fashion Week welcomes esteemed press, buyers and influencers to four days of shows, presentations and events as well as the two trade shows CIFF and Revolver.

The first Copenhagen Fashion Week was held in 2006, the result of a merger of previous Danish clothing trade fairs, Dansk Modeuge and Dansk Herremodeuge, which date back to the 1950s. Copenhagen Fashion Week is owned by the Danish Fashion Institute.

While, I did not attend Copenhagen fashion week, I carefully watched all the shows on line. Certainly, I love fashion weeks, the street style, the designers collections and the energy and focus on creativity. Therefore, I am excited to report that Copenhagen is becoming the new edge of style. If I have learnt anything from Copenhagen Fashion Week, it is this: expect the unexpected. Furthermore, I have to rebuke any preconceptions I had of a simple, Scandinavian style. Danish designers showcased a series of outlandish, unrestrained and vibrant collections. From models dancing down the runway to more than one cowboy-inspired collection, Copenhagen SS20 should be remembered for its spirited sense of fun.

3 COLLECTIONS FROM COPENHAGEN FASHION WEEK

While, it would be great to give coverage to all the designers who showed at Copenhagen Fashion Week, I can't. In fact even in covering my own local Vancouver Fashion Week, I make choices about what I am drawn to. Certainly, the point of this post is to show you the best of Copenhagen Fashion week. Therefore I have chosen 3 collections to show from the week.

GANNI

SPRING 2020

It is the 10th anniversary of this fabulous Danish label. Ganni has almost single-handedly been responsible for putting Copenhagen Fashion Week on the International stage. It has been a pretty epic decade for designer Ditte and (bussiness partner) Nicolaj Reffstrup. Today, the Reffstrups are preparing to open their first retail locations in the U.S.

If you are a regular reader of my blog you know I love this label. I have written here about Ganni before, here is a link to that story.

Since, Ganni's earliest days legions of young women have made this label a favorite. Therefore, this S/S 2020 anniversary collection pays homage to the favorites of the Ganni Girls. While, paying homage by including pretty floral dresses, tops, and skirts in a light lavender shade, this collection is Ganni 2.0. Therefore, Ganni 2.0 is about higher quality fabrics, more sophisticated tailoring and superior construction. However, what stood out the most was the huge helping of cool. Every so often you see a collection that seems to touch the pulse of whats happening, this is such a collection.

In fact, the cool young looks included bib dresses styled over tee-shirts, splashes of leopard print, and a balloon-sleeved frock. Certainly, the new strides include silk suiting coupled with pleather and some draped looks. Furthermore, my excitement about this collection is based on years of watching this point of view develop at Ganni. In the best spirit of fashion weeks, Copenhagen Fashion Week has supported a brand that is creative, fresh, and fashion forward.

STINE GOYA

S/S 2020

Darling's Fashion Weeks around the world love to have someone put on a show, and in Copenhagen Stine Goya got that crown. Presenting a colorful, patterned and energetic presentation, Stine Goya had the best runway show of the week. While, it goes against the grain of most fashion weeks, Goya chose her models in a most unconventional way. Reaching out to the ballroom dancing world, and enlisting volunteers from the internet to cast her show. In fact, the line up was the most diverse that Copenhagen Fashion Week has ever experienced. Certainly, the cheering crowd showed their love to the cast. LGBTQ vougers sashayed the basketball court, while brown and black models gave us super model attitude. Overall you could not tell who was having a better time the models or the audience.

The clothes were as fun as the models. Over-sized polka dots and puff sleeves that put the 1980's to shame.  Unquestionably the bold patterns, ruffles, mini-skirts and disco heels made this show an extravaganza. While, the minimalists shy away such vibrant revelry, has minimalism ever been fun? Well maybe Halston, but thats a different story. Since, so much of the fashion world seems serious and somber, I yearned to be among-st this joyful crowd.

SAKS POTTS

S/S 2020

Saks Potts is a Copenhagen-based outerwear brand launched in 2014 by Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts. ... Growing up in Copenhagen together they realized that the most important investment in a woman's wardrobe is a beautiful coat. While, outerwear was a starting point Saks Potts has grown into a label that has become an international success

In fact, looking for international influence, Saks Potts muse for their S/S 2020 collection is Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. Known only as Selena, she is the Mexican-American singer who was tragically killed by her manager in 1995. Cowboy boots and bedazzled bras gave a feel of a Texan rodeo. With extra attention paid to hot leather jackets and denim jackets with the full baggy sleeves of 1990's street style. It seems every designer has at some point in their career gone cowboy, as thou it is a rite of passage. Saks Potts went a bit cowboy, however, the spirit of this label is again a story of fun and a new edge on the runway.

IN CONCLUSION

Darling's, I am well aware that we all can't jet off to all the Fashion Weeks around the globe, fortunately for us in this modern world we can take a virtual trip. Certainly, this can't replace a first-hand experience, however, I can share my virtual trip and share my insights.

My insights tell me that Copenhagen is a Fashion Week to keep our eyes on. In fact, the vibrancy, creativity and commitment have created a new fun edge of style. Moreover, this new edge is committed to a sustainable fashion industry. Keenly aware of the fashion industry’s substantial environmental and social impact, Copenhagen Fashion Week announced in early 2019 its goal to intensify efforts to become a more sustainable event and industry platform.

What stood out most about this Fashion Week is that it presented a sense of fun, and that is what gave it this new edge of style. What the world needs right now is some fun. Therefore, always remember clothing is  never so serious that we can't find some fun.

Watch this space for the upcoming Vancouver Fashion Week stories. I will have a preview later this week.
