CANNES 2018
Cannes 2018, like every Spring is a highlight of both the film and fashion worlds year . Therefore we can again see its glamorous yachts, countless celebrities, and couture looks. The Cannes Film Festival is one of my favorite events. When Hollywood and Europe meet it's like two different worlds collide. In fact when the sophisticated French Riviera meets the shameless glamour of Hollywood a certain magic happens. And for 75 years Cannes has premiered some of the greatest classics of the cinema. Not to mention that it has also launched some of the industry's most illustrious careers.
Darling's Cannes 2018 was no different in the glamour department either . Since it's very beginning the marriage of French couture and American glitz has given us a very unique red carpet. Certainly Hollywood has lots of red carpets but nothing like Cannes . When Cannes happens it's like the stars shine with more daring, original and inspired fashions. As a matter of fact designers love to have their garments strutted on the Cannes red carpet more than any other.
CANNES 2018 THE RED CARPET
This year, the festival kicked off in a major way with Julianne Moore. Notably Ms. Moore blew everyone else out of the water in a Givenchy Haute Couture red gown. Second day brought us Lupita Nyong'o in a ruched Miu Miu look, I loved it. Not to be outdone Carey Mulligan shone in a stunning minimalist Christian Dior Haute Couture gown. Since then, we’ve seen Cate Blanchett in a custom Mary Katrantzou, and Bella Hadid’s return in Dior Haute Couture. Again the extraordinary Lupita Nyong’o in a Christian Dior couture gown. Furthermore Isabelle Huppert stunned in Saint Laurent. And if that weren’t enough Jane Fonda blessed us with her presence twice. What a fabulous fashion parade. Darlings I am a film lover also, but fashion is always first.
Dress The Part always loves the combination of movie stardom and fashion. Moreover I have posted on fashion and film icons Tippi Hendren, Audrey Hepburn, and the Cannes darling Brigitte Bardot. Whenever I'm inspired by fashion looks I automatically think how can I put that into my blog. Therefore some of the Cannes 2018 red carpet looks mentioned above I found inspiring enough to use here. What I've done is I've chosen one of the looks and found outfits inspired by that look . I hope you enjoy and get inspired !
CANNES 2018 GET INSPIRED
Weddings, parties, galas ... If you have any events on your calendar that require you to get dressed up, then you will want to get inspired by the glamorous looks at Cannes Film Festival. Actresses, models, and film makers are flooding the scene in one-of-a-kind gowns that are sure to help you pick out an outfit. From caped gowns to long-sleeve dresses, we've pretty much seen it all this year. Darlings be prepared for some great achievable looks.
JULIANNE MOORE IN GIVENCHY COUTURE
Here is the beautiful Julianne Moore looking like a million bucks in this brilliant red Givenchy Couture gown. Darlings this is a fantastic dress. Certainly few of you will be able to wear a couture gown,( follow this link to a Vogue article about the creation of this dress)but you can recreate the look. Since our objective here is to put across the impression of the dress , we must examine what elements create the, mood, sense or semblance.
First and most important is the silhouette , this dress has a strong column feel a simple elegant shape.
Second is the weight of the fabric and finish , much like the classic Givenchy , the silhouette is created partly by the fabric. Hence a fabric with less movement will help to create this look . The finish here looks matte , like a jersey.
Third in this case is the color , the bright red is essential to this recreation. However you try their are two specific designer components that are very hard to institute ,the cape and the fringe . Moreover I don't consider either essential to giving us this strong, bold and vibrant tone.
Therefore darlings I have chosen 3 dresses at 3 different price points to help fulfill our ambition.

CAREY MULLIGAN IN CHRISTIAN DIOR HAUTE COUTURE GOWN
The British actress Carey Mulligan lit the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. All eyes were upon her when she attended a photocall and red carpet in this fabulous gown. Certainly I was awed with sliced-and-diced dress with a carwash skirt. For those who are unfamiliar with the silhouette, it’s just what it sounds like. a hem with fringe-like folds that closely resembles the top brush at a carwash.
CANNES 2018 ; RECREATE THIS LOOK
Whenever you consider a dress or gown on of the features to contemplate is how the garment moves. In this case that is the main characteristic. When you see this gown moving you truly get the full experience of this amazing look. When Mulligan posed for the cameras, the dress appeared relatively covered up. However with each step you got a flash of legs and this pendulous swinging . Therefore to emulate this look the first thing you must consider is the movement . Secondly is the lack of decoration giving it a very minimal look, although a slight pattern would spoil the look . Third is of course the straight ,minimal silhouette. However as many of you know I usually am not a huge fan of such minimal looks, in this case I admit it is supreme. Most notably the dress is a couture piece and is of superb workmanship . I have assumed you all know what Haute Couture is if not follow this link. Moreover again I have chosen several frocks that would be fit to create this look. Although the last gown has a different color it has the desired movement.
CATE BLANCHEET IN MARY KATRANTZOU
When Cate Blancheet was named president of the jury for the 71st Cannes Film Festival I wasn't surprised. After all she's one of my favorite film stars. Furthermore I knew that meant some serious moments on the red carpet. Cate is not only a star on the screen but consistently rules on the red carpet.
Whenever Ms. Blancheet steps out onto the red carpet we never know what to expect. Therefore it was no shock to see Cate step out in a custom Mary Katrantzou creation. The graphic black and white print juxtaposed with the joyous explosion of colour brings to mind an artwork in progress. The design is actually inspired by painting by numbers and builds on a print from Katrantzou Spring 2018.
In fact this might be the hardest dress to emulate , but I certainly feel inspired . What you first want to look for is a dress with a balloon or mullet hem. Moreover the balloon hem look can also be achieved with a hi-low hem. However equally important is the bright vibrant color pallet . This style of dress has an amazing silhouette , which depending on the fabric could be formal or more casual. I put myself up to the challenge and have found these great dresses below.
LUPITA NYONG'O IN DIOR COUTURE
Lupita looked positively ethereal on the red carpet in Cannes, posing for pictures in this fluttery feather gown by Dior. This couture piece featured a sheer, cage like bodice that cinched her waist before falling to the floor in an elegant A-line sweep. The floaty and feminine skirt was a playful contrast to the gown's alluring top- indeed a feat in sartorial planning that only Dior could pull off.
Sadly Lupita's dress was one of a kind so we won't be able to get our mortal paws on this exact look. But if you're inspired by Lupita's stunning red carpet style then look below for my selected looks. Whenever trying to get inspired look for the factors that give you the essence of the outfit. In this case the ethereal, gossamer, airy feel. I could go on giving adjectives all day like celestial, dainty and angelic. However many words I can come up with only the visual does this dress justice. Therefore to recreate this look I can give no other advice , but to look at the source and try generate those feelings.
CANNES 2018 - IN CONCLUSION
Whatever may be your take , part of what I like to do is to train the viewer to look carefully. Darling's whether you agree , disagree or remain neutral with my opinion , mean's your looking . Of course the idea of learning to look at silhouette , cut , and design is something people are trained to do . Therefore this post is also an exercise in looking for design elements and to think of the effect. I have chosen dresses from different price points that reflect the essence of the original. I hope you see how I met my objective. However you see these dresses they are all beautiful and I have worked with my partners to offer them here.
