BLUE TAMBURIN- a REVIEW
BLUE TAMBURIN is a label that speaks to its intentions of launching a brand that wants to bring beauty to the world. Designer Bomin Kim's philosophy on fashion — “Beautiful People, Beautiful Lives” is BlueTamburin’s slogan, which is why it dubs itself a “social impact fashion brand.”
While beauty is subjective, from the response of the audience, Bomin Kim was successful in her desire to create something beautiful. The inspiration for this collection was constellations in the night sky. The collection incorporates Western silhouettes with Eastern details. The designer is influenced by hanbok, an umbrella term used to refer to traditional ethnic Korean clothes. The traditional Korean costume includes full floor-length skirts and long sleeve tops for women. The men's hanbok consists of full trousers and a variety of vests, jackets, and coats. These traditional Korean elements are incorporated into this collection with skill melding the Eastern and Western.
Kim drew on her love of history and fabric to send a romantic collection inspired by fantasy down the catwalk. Empire cut bodices, waistcoats and sheer overcoats are a hybrid of Regency period drama and modern elements.
A muted color palette mirrors the tones of light and shadow, shades of blue are paired with creamy neutrals, and rose pink echoes the designer's love of florals. Stand-out garments include a gauzy mottled green silk regency-inspired men's coat that wafts and floats. Sweeping gowns drift lightly down the runway. One such gown is creamy, ruffled, with balloon sleeves, and has a hand-painted image of Venus from "The Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli on the side. This collection features 3-D flowers, lace trim, mesh fabrics, and button detailing on garments.
BLUE TAMBURIN IN CONCLUSION
Blue Tamburin is a collection full of historical references and details. This collection speaks to the costume designer in me. With all that said, this is a brand for today, with individualistic pieces suited to a contemporary wardrobe. These clothes come with a sense of occasion, and fulfill the designer's brief of bringing beauty to the world.
